Newsletter 10: July 2007NEWSProgress on Thematic Working GroupsMonRAS held two thematic working group meetings this month:
At each meeting, an external speaker raised a number of key issues on the theme that were then discussed by participants. If you would like to participate in these or other MonRAS working groups in future, please register your interest at monras@adm.monash.edu.au Special Seminar Hosted by MonRAS, the Transport and Social Inclusion Committee and the ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing WellMeeting the Mobility Needs of Older People. If You’re Not Part of the Solution, You’re Part of the Problem
Monash University has been fortunate to have Dr Sandra Rosenbloom from the University of Arizona as a visiting speaker to diverse audiences this week. At a presentation jointly sponsored by MonRAS, the ARC/NHMRC Network in Ageing Well and the Transport and Social Inclusion Committee (TASIC) of the Department of Infrastructure, Dr Rosenbloom gave a challenging and entertaining presentation on the mobility need of the elderly. Dr Rosenbloom challenged many myths and preconceptions about the elderly and their desires and preferences for housing and transport. The increased independence and mobility of the baby-boomer generation was shown to make an increasing contribution to travel and related issues of congestion and pollution. Planners and engineers looking at the transport needs of the elderly were particularly encouraged to better understand the changing population profiles and dispersal patterns of older people in metropolitan, outer suburban and rural areas. Dr Rosenbloom also reflected on the failure of academic institutions to incorporate teaching units on ageing into courses such as engineering and planning.
