Newsletter 3: July 2006Welcome to the MonRAS monthly newsletter, your link to the latest in ageing research at Monash University The MonRAS e-newsletter archive is available - here. Monash Research for an Ageing Society July ConferenceThe Monash Research for an Ageing Society 1st Annual Research conference took place at the Bayview Conference Centre on Monday 10 July with over 150 delegates attending. Aimed primarily at the Monash University research community, guests also included representatives from government, community, industry and philanthropic groups. Gene presented a number of designs for the MonRAS Executive Committee to consider. After some discussion we readily approved Gene’s preferred design. We thank Gene for his excellent work and the staff at MAPA for the quick approval process. Here are some of Gene’s thoughts about the development of the MonRAS brand: The circle is representational of life cycles, unity and democracy. If it is anything, the aging process is democratic; it happens to us all, regardless of gender, race or social standing. Secondly, water is the most apparent and universal symbol of life. The aging process is not about an end or death. It is a part of life; a part of a journey that is begun at birth, not entered into at a given age. Water also has the added benefit of being without form, colour or gender. Water is also unpredictable. A simple drop into the surface and one wave of ripple results in the next; an apparently endless series of cause and effect. Like research, one discovery is the impetus for the next. And so to the identity: age and research represented a ripple in a vast and seeming infinite space: An endless quest for knowledge regarding a period of human life so often overlooked.
Sub-theme Networking MeetingsAs MonRAS has mapped researcher interests in the area of ageing a number of sub-themes have emerged. These include
Meetings of interested researchers are being arranged, in the near future, to explore these sub-themes and to develop collaborative research proposals for MonRAS RSS or other funding opportunities. Partnering with relevant industry partners such as Baptcare and VECCI (Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also being promoted through these research groups. If you are interested in attending these meetings and/or joining a sub-theme research group please contact the MonRAS team Other NewsAgeing Well SeminarColette Browning, Professor of Healthy Ageing in the Monash Institute of Health Services Research will be presenting on "AN OVERVIEW OF ARC/NHMRC RESEARCH NETWORK IN AGEING WELL" at the Monash University Accident Research Centre lunchtime seminar series on Thursday 27th July at 1pm in the 3rd Floor teaching area. Successful grant applicationCongratulations to Prof Carol Morse, Dr Christopher King, Lynn Gray, Sue Leake on their successful grant application to the Department of Health and Ageing Title: "information and service needs of the ‘baby-boom’ generation as carers of persons with dementia, and as future receivers of care" The information and service needs of the ‘baby-boom’ generation as carers of persons with dementia, and as future receivers of care are distinct from those of their parents’ generation and of their own children. Appropriate dementia support services need to be urgently developed that meet multi-generational needs. The proposed project will be located in a community that is demographically the most rapidly ageing region of Victoria with 33.6% of its population aged between 40 and 64 years. The project will develop communications between the 'baby boom' residents and community-based dementia service providers in order to raise awareness of dementia among this group, to understand their dementia support needs as carers and care recipients and to collaboratively develop and promote at the community level, services that better meet their needs Research Assistant requiredService usage pathways in dementia respite A Research Assistant is required to work on a pilot research project on service pathways of people with dementia and their caregivers. The results of the pilot project will form the basis for a larger research project on dementia respite usage patterns among persons with dementia and their caregivers living in regionalVictoria.
