Newsletter 6: March 2007

Welcome to new MonRAS staff member

MonRAS Director, David Harrison, is pleased to welcome Dr Sika Ristevski as the new Project officer in the MonRAS team.

After a successful career as a research scientist, Sika sought to broaden her training and experience in policy development and ethics by completing a law degree. Sika is especially interested in supporting interdisciplinary teams to further expand and develop rigorous research and evaluation capacity in the area of ageing.

MonRAS launches Ageing Research Evening Forums for 2007

As part of its commitment to raising the profile of ageing research at Monash University and the ongoing development of research capacity in this area, MonRAS is holding a series of research forums. These forums will be focused around the following ageing themes:

  • Accessing global ageing research opportunities (28 March 2007)
  • The ageing workforce (6 June 2007)
  • Evidence based treatment and care of the very old (15 August 2007)
  • Transport and mobility options for the aged (17 October 2007).

The objective of the forums is to bring a multidisciplinary perspective to these themes, and to provoke topical discussion and debate. Broad participation from a wide range of Monash researchers involved in ageing research, along with key external stakeholders, is anticipated. The forums will provide a springboard for further discussion and collaboration between researchers.

Each forum will be held at the Monash University Club (Building 50, Clayton Campus) between 4-6pm. A principal speaker/moderator will open the forum with a presentation of 20 minutes. Subsequently, 2-3 speakers will give 10-15 minute presentations, followed by discussion and an opportunity for the audience to meet with the panel of speakers.

To register your interest in attending these forums, simply complete the MonRAS webform  and you will be notified of all future events. Alternatively, please e-mail monras@adm.monash.edu.au

Book launch - "Lessons on Ageing From Three Nations"

MonRAS is proud to sponsor the launch of Lessons on Ageing From Three Nations. The two volumes represent a multinational edited works on global ageing. The volumes explore care giving and end-of-life practices and issues in three nations (Australia, Israel and the USA), highlighting the challenges of population ageing and diversity faced by developed nations throughout the world. The works provide valuable lessons from which other nations may benefit.

Lessons on Ageing From Three Nations is co-edited by Carol Morse, Professor and Foundation Director of Health and Wellbeing Research at Monash University.

MonRAS joins the Centres and Institutes Directors Group

To further expand the multi-disciplinary reach of MonRAS, our Director, David Harrison, has been invited to join the Monash University Centres and Institutes Directors’ Group.

ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Aging Well

Monash University is fortunate to be linked into the national ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing Well through the Victorian Convenor, Colette Browning, Professor of Healthy Ageing in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

Establishment of the Monash University Ageing Research THINK-TANK

As an integral part of the Monash University Research for an Ageing Society initiative, a Think-Tank is to be established. This is an exciting initiative aimed at positioning our university in the forefront of interdisciplinary research into ageing. The initiative is strongly supported by the University Executive.

The Think-Tank will include selected individuals from a diverse range of disciplines within the university and several external individuals with a mix of community, corporate and national policy perspectives.

The aim of the Think-Tank is to explore the widest implications of ageing in Australia and its impact on our community by:

  • identifying and scoping areas warranting research and analysis to inform the community, governments and providers of services to the ageing;
  • developing brief discussion papers encapsulating emerging issues in ageing; and
  • facilitating and encouraging interdisciplinary research by Monash University researchers.

Invitations from the Chairperson of the MonRAS Executive Committee Professor David Copolov have been sent personally to the selected participants.

It is anticipated that the Think-Tank members will meet informally in early May 2007 and have two formal, independently facilitated working sessions in late June and late October 2007 respectively.

Outcomes from the Think-Tank sessions will be widely distributed throughout the MonRAS network.

Collaboration with Bayside Health Network to facilitate ageing research

MonRAS has been invited by Bayside Health (incorporating the Alfred, Caulfield and Sandringham Hospitals) to facilitate a workshop to explore the nature and extent of an ongoing research alliance with Monash University. Bayside Health’s especially strong relationship with its local communities and general practitioners creates a wide range of research and evaluation opportunities in collaboration with clinical practitioners in the area.

Register your interest with MonRAS

The number of researches with an interest in ageing who have completed our web-form is now over 150.
Whether you are looking to break into ageing research, seeking assistance with funding or looking for potential collaborators, completing the web-form will help MonRAS to help you. If you are yet to complete the form, please follow this link
